Plans are already underway to build a 6.5 acre park and 600-space underground parking garage, directly west of Columbus' dynamic Center of Science and Industry (COSI). These additions will highlight the neighborhood as a cultural destination, attracting residents and visitors to Downtown.
The project was prioritized in the 2010 Downtown Strategic Plan. The park plans include themed gardens, a play area for children, and a plaza with a café and a fountain. The new park will be for more than entertainment, though; it will work as a catalyst promoting redevelopment. Adding meaningful green space in front of the top-rated science museum and adjacent to the Veterans Memorial and Museum will make it a welcoming entryway into Downtown's next great neighborhood – the Scioto Peninsula. The Scioto Peninsula Plan calls for residential, retail and office space. Soon it will be home to mixed-use developments, all anchored by the new green space and cultural amenities.
Capitol South is serving as the project manager, working with Corna Kokosing, Desman and MKSK. The park and garage project is slated to begin in September 2016, with targeted completion in November 2017.
